Ive been a regular user of a competitors app (Milebug) for a few years and really was looking for a fresh design overhaul with similar or better functionality. Mileage Log delivers on the former but not the latter.
The design is modern and sharp. I like the colors, the UI, and I appreciate the method/terms used for inputting data — all better than what I was used to. The design gets 5 stars.
However, the biggest functionality miss for me is in the export feature. In short, the options are limited. Theres no way to export to a CSV, Numbers or Excel format but rather only in PDF. Furthermore, the data isnt gathered, categorized or totaled. The user isnt able to dictate how or what to report beyond a date range or by rate-type (only after performing a search to group all like-types together). This adds way to much trouble to deliver a fully usable mileage report.
Adding insult to injury is the previously mentioned PDF. First, its a PDF and the data isnt in a format you can immediately use or manipulate to manually create the totals, categories, etc. — none of which, as I said above, are included in the export. Youre left to copy and paste, reducing the app to little more than eye candy. Its actually worse than that, because the report only gives a "pretty" PDF summary of each individual trip you logged. I report mileage for work on a regular basis and each report contains multiple trips - so Im left having to add the trips and their expenses up manually after all.
Needless to say, the app needs to be fleshed out quite a bit more. I regret not being able to stay with it because of the preferable design, but I need the nuts and bolts underneath the lovely façade to deliver the right function, and for now, that isnt this app.
